The Kecksburg U̳F̳O̳ I̳n̳c̳i̳d̳e̳n̳t̳
The Kecksburg U̳F̳O̳ incident occurred on December 9, 1965, in Kecksburg, Pennsylvania, United States. A large, bright fireball was seen by thousands in at least six US states and Ontario, Canada. It spread through the Detroit, Michigan – Windsor, Canada area. It was reported to have spewed hot metallic debris over Michigan and northern Ohio, starting grass fires and causing sonic booms in the greater Pittsburgh area. The press generally assumed that the mere information reported it to be a meteor after authorities ruled out other proposed explanations, such as a plane crash, a failed missile test or the re-entry of satellite debris. However, eyewitnesses in the small town of Kecksburg, about 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, said something had crashed in the woods. One child said that he saw the object land; His mother saw a wisp of blue smoke rising from the woods and alerted the authorities. Another reported feeling a vibration and a “knock” about the time the object supposedly landed. The Tribune-Review of neighboring Greensburg, which had a reporter on the scene, ran an article the next morning: “Unidentified Flying Object Goes Down Near Kecksburg Army Ropes A̳r̳e̳a̳.” The article continued: “The area where the object landed was immediately sealed off by order of US Army and State Police officers, allegedly in anticipation of a \’close inspection\’ of what may have fallen… state police ordered the area cordoned off to await the expected arrival of US Army engineers and possibly civilian scientists.” However, a later edition of the newspaper stated that nothing had been found after authorities searched the area.
The official explanation for the widely seen fireball was that it was a medium-sized meteor. However, speculation as to the identity of the Kecksburg object (if there have been reports of one) ranges from a̳l̳i̳e̳n̳ spacecraft to debris from Kosmos 96, a Soviet space probe destined for Venus but which failed and never left Earth\’s atmosphere.
Similarities have been drawn between the Kecksburg incident and the Roswell U̳F̳O̳ incident, leading to the former being known as “Pennsylvania\’s Roswell.”
