Storm Warning in Victoria: Heavy Rain, Hail, and Dangerous Winds Expected

Victoria is prepared for severe thunderstorms on Friday, with heavy rain, flash flooding, huge hail, and damaging winds. Discover how to prepare and be safe during this hazardous weather event.

According to Kevin Parkyn, a meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology, a low-pressure system moving in from the Great Australian Bight is predicted to clash with tropical moisture from northern Australia. This combination creates an ideal atmosphere for thunderstorms to develop.

The interplay of these two systems will result in increasing humidity, which, along with the strengthening low-pressure system, will most likely result in thunderstorms by Friday morning. As the day develops, the probability of severe storms grows, potentially resulting in hazardous conditions in the afternoon.

While uncertain weather is not uncommon at this time of year, Friday’s forecast is noteworthy for the possible severity of the conditions. Parkyn stressed that thunderstorms could form quickly during the morning, with conditions deteriorating in the afternoon.

“As these thunderstorms intensify, we anticipate that they will result in heavy rainfall, flash flooding, large hail, and damaging gusts,” Parkyn informed reporters.. Flash flooding could quickly become a major issue, especially in low-lying places where drainage systems may be overwhelmed by fast, intense rains. Large hailstones could inflict damage to automobiles, rooftops, and outdoor property, while high winds might knock down trees and powerlines, endangering houses and infrastructure.

Prepare for the storm

Given the potential of severe weather, residents must prepare ahead of time. The BoM recommends remaining informed with weather updates and preparing your property for any hazards.
