“Car Crash in Sydney Apartment Complex Leads to Fire and Evacuations A driver is on the run after a stolen car exploded into a Sydney apartment complex, sparking a fire and requiring evacuations.”
Police are searching for a motorist after a spectacular fire in Sydney’s west sparked a fire and forced the evacuation of hundreds of people on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. when a stolen Toyota RAV4 crashed into an apartment complex on Gladstone Street in Maryland and burst into flames.
Surveillance footage shows the automobile passing through a pedestrian area before colliding with the structure. The resulting fire prompted approximately 250 residents to leave the complex as a precaution, although no injuries or structural damage to the structure were recorded. The fire was eventually brought under control, and residents returned to their homes.
Authorities are investigating to see if the accident was planned. Detective Superintendent Simon Glasser observed that the fire right next to the building could be dangerous.
“It’s very fortunate … you don’t know what could have happened,” Glasser said. “It could have been very dangerous.”
Moorebank police said the stolen Toyota RAV4 that was in the accident was taken at 1:30 am on September 15, 2018.
A knitted jacket and a hat were seen on the driver, who was said to have driven away from the crash scene without being caught. The police are now looking for the person they believe did the weird and dangerous act.
People who live in the building also said that the complex had been broken into a few weeks before, with property being stolen from the gym. The police are looking into whether this past crime has anything to do with what happened on Thursday.
While the police look into what happened, they want anyone who knows anything about the crash or where the driver is to come forward. For now, the people who live in Merrylands are scared but grateful that things didn’t get stranger.
